Andy Vu, Class of 1998, is a beloved member of the Reston tennis community and was the face of south Lakes tennis from 1995 to 1998. He earned a varsity letter and played as a starter as a freshman and continued to do so through his senior year. He was an inspiraiton to and an enthusiastic supporter of all his teammates. In 1995, he and doubles partner James Elliott were the Concorde District and Norther Regio Champions and took 2nd place at the state level, earning Andy an All-Met Honorable Mention. In 1996, he moved up to the All-Met First Team after winning the District singles and doubles championship, placing 2nd in Regional singles and first in doubles and placing 3rd in State doubles with James. His junior year brought the District singles championship, the District doubles championship (with Long Nguyen), 4th place in Regional singles and another All Met 1st Team recognition.
During his senior year, Andy was unstoppable. He was Concorde District singles champion and doubles runner-up (with Anmol Verma). Competing at the regional level, he took the singles championship and again placed 2nd in doubles. At his final state tournament, Andy played brilliantly bringing home the state singles championship . . . and was again named to the All-Met 1st Team.
In addition to playing for South Lakes, Andy competed in junior level tournaments from 1992 to 1998, earning a national ranking. Andy began his college career playing varsity at Texas A&M where his team was ranked in the top 25. From 1999-2001 he played at Virginia Tech where he was ranked in the top 30 national ITA collegiate doubles rankings and won the USC Invitational in singles. Andy has lived in Los Angeles for 11 years and is a software engineer with a background in tech startups. Andy played with style, skill, and respect for his opponents and teammates. He represents the best of sport and sportsmanship.
