FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 27, 2019 SOUTH LAKES TRACK AND FIELD RELAY TEAMS BREAK SCHOOL RECORDS AT PENN RELAYS Both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter girls relay teams from South Lakes High School broke school records at the Penn Relays April 25-26 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Juniors Hannah Waller, Rhema Konadu, sophomore Juviannadean Mullings and freshman Jillian Howard ran a 47.28 to finish 12th out of 611 teams. Along with breaking the school record they set earlier this month at the Lake Braddock Hall of Fame Invitational, they qualified for the National Division championship the following day where they ran a 47.95 for third place. Waller, Mullings and Howard teamed with junior Mary Gregory for a 3:48.52 in the 4x400 meter relay. They finished 10th out of 611 teams and just missed competing in the Championship of the America. The foursome broke their own school record of 3:51.28 set April 6 at the Arcadia Invitational in California. Lead by senior Isabelle Gulgert, the girls 4x800 relay team of juniors Caitlyn Morris, Emily Lannen and freshman Annika Yu ran a 9:26.09 to finish 12th out of 65 teams. The team advanced to the Championship of America race the following day, where they finished in 9:22.06 for seventh place. All three relays team that competed at the Penn Relays finish with 6A State Meet qualifying times. Other members of the SLHS track team battled stormy and rainy conditions competing in the Phoenix Invitational April 26 at Rock Ridge High School in Ashburn. Despite the conditions, juniors Jackson Cooley and Caleb Miller had state-meet qualifying performances. Cooley ran a 11.03 in the 100 meters for third place. Miller won the shot put with a throw of 49-09.50. Miller also finished third in the discus with a region meet mark of 134-06.00. Region meet qualifying marks were also set by: **Senior Nicole Post in the long jump (16-07.50, 3rd) and 100 meter hurdles (16.00 2nd) **Senior Kristen Williams in the long jump (16-02.50, 5th) **Senior Samantha Van Haaren in the high jump (4-10.00, 6th) Williams led a top five finish in the girls 300 hurdles finishing second with a 49.40, followed by fellow seniors Alana Pardo (51.37, 3rd) and Selin Boybeyi (51.39, 4th). All three are Liberty District meet qualifying marks. Other district meet qualifying performances include: Pardo in the 100 meter hurdles (17.87, 6th), senior Emma Grossback in the 3,200 meters (12:10.91, 3rd), senior Nicky Napolitano in the 400 meters (52.75, 5th), sophomore Ebi Fiobotei in the 100 meter dash (11.67, 13th) and junior Sarah Jane Brown in the shot put (30-11.00, 5th). South Lakes will begin its May competitions at 5 p.m. on May 1 as host of the Liberty District Jamboree. Seahawks seniors and track alumni will be featured at the Nike Spring Invitational Saturday, May 4 at SLHS. The annual meet which regularly features some of the areas top high school track and field athletes, will also have a reception for South Lakes High School track alumni. The evening will start at 3:15 p.m. when the Class of 2019 will be honored.
