TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS HAVE SUCCESS AT LIBERTY CHRISTMAS INVITATIONAL
Waller, competing in her first indoor high school track meet, won the girls 55 meters in a school record time of 6.94. She broke the mark of 7.28 set by Nikayla Hoyte during the 2015-2016 season, when she ran a 7.06 in the trials. Both times are 6A State Championship qualifiers and her time in the final is the fastest in the nation this season.
Waller, junior Nicole Post and fellow sophomores Mary Gregory and Rhema Konadu finished second in 4x200 meter relay. Their time of 1:45.54, spurred by Waller’s 24.2 split, qualified the team for the state meet.
Junior Isabelle Gulgert won both the 1,000 meters (3:11.41) and the 1,600 meters (5:11.53), qualifying for the Liberty District championship meet in the 1,000 and the state meet in the 1,600.
SLHS also won the boys 1,600 with senior Sean Casey finishing with a Region Championship meet qualifying time of 4:30.87. Casey, the Liberty Conference cross country champion, also qualified for the region meet in the 1,000 meters, where he finished fourth with a time of 2:37.61. Senior Alex Loukili was second in that race with a 2:33.29, qualifying him for the state championship.
Another region meet qualifier from that meet was senior Ronak Cuthill, who finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 46-08.00.
Junior Stevie Jones qualified for the region meet with a 6.73 in the preliminaries of the boys 55 meters. He finished fourth in the final (6.80) and was third in the long jump with a district qualifying jump of 19-07.00.
The Seahawks got off to the great start when juniors Sophie Halkett, Jordan Anderson and seniors Reagan Tobias and Aly Rayle won the first running event of the meet, the girls 4x800 meter relay, in 10:17.72. The boys 4x800 meter relay team of senior Peter Delmolino and juniors Calvin Warstler, Webb Nims and Alex Lawson finished third (8:45.87).
